HÀ NỘI — Trần Tuấn Minh of Việt Nam shared top place with other athletes following the first round of the World Junior and Girls U20 Chess Championship in Tarvisio, Italy, on Monday.

The Grandmaster (GM) beat Sukovic Andrej of Montenegro in the first match of the junior category.

He will next play International Master (IM) Huber Martin Christian from Austria.

His teammate and younger brother IM Trần Minh Thắng drew Norwegian GM Tari Aryan. His next challenge will be No 1 seed GM Van Foreest Jorden of the Netherlands.

Minh is the newest GM of Việt Nam after he grabbed the last norm from the HD Bank International tournament in HCM City early this year. The 20-year-old won the standard and rapid chess titles at April’s National Chess Championships. A month later, he triumphed at the Asian U20 competition’s rapid chess event.

Minh is currently the national No 3 master, behind GMs Lê Quang Liêm and Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn.

His brother Thắng was the former world U8 champion. Last October, he brought home a bronze medal from the World Youth Chess Championships’ U16 class, held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. — VNS
