HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thuỳ Linh of Việt Nam won the Beer Lao International Series badminton tournament, beating Benyapa Aimsaard of Thailand in the women’s singles final match in Vientiane on Sunday.
Linh, the tournament No. 1 seed, beat unseeded Aimsaard 21-12, 16-21, 21-11 in a 46-minute match at the Thai-Lao Friendship Gymnasium.
It is Linh’s second international title this year, earlier triumphing at a Mongolian event in June.
Linh’s male teammate Phạm Cao Cường claimed the bronze medal, losing to Thai Kantawat Leelavechabutr in the men’s singles semifinals.
No 4 Leelavechabutr went on to win the title, beating No. 8 Mek Narongrit, his country-fellow, 16-21, 21-12, 21-12.
The Lao tournament attracted nearly 100 athletes from nine countries, vying for a total purse of US$8,000 across five categories. — VNS
