HÀ NỘI – Athletes from HCM City topped the 18th national sports tournament for the disabled that ended in the capital city on June 19.
The HCM City team bagged 269 gold, 246 silver and 140 bronze medals. Hà Nội was second with 125 gold, 79 silver and 55 bronzes, followed by Quảng Trị with 18 gold, 27 silver and 11 bronze medals.
HCM City and Hà Nội also won first and second places in the junior tournament for the disabled, with Thái Nguyên coming in third.
Vũ Thế Phiệt, vice chairman and general secretary of the Việt Nam Paralympics Association, said this year’s tournament was held on a larger scale than in previous years, drawing many young talents with bright prospects for the Asian Para Games and Paralympic Games 2020.
The event was organised by the Việt Nam Paralympics Association, the National Sports Administration and the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It drew more than 1,000 athletes and coaches from 32 localities across the country.
It aimed to select athletes for the upcoming ninth ASEAN Para Games. The Vietnamese contingent is expected to have 110 athletes competing in seven out of 16 sports at the event. — VNS
