HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam will play Thailand in their opening match of the Southeast Asian Women’s U15 Football Championship in Vientiane, Laos, on May 8.

It is the first ever tournament organised for U15 players. In the debut tournament, nine teams have been divided into two groups. Việt Nam and Thailand are in Group A with Myanmar, Malaysia and the hosts.

Group A is being considered a difficult pool as Việt Nam, Thailand and Myanmar are the regional leading teams who rank higher, compared with the rest.

Group B includes Singapore, the Philippines, Cambodia and Timor Leste.

Teams will play in a round-robin format in the group stage. The best two squads from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The final is scheduled to be held on May 20.

“My players are in good mood and feel comfortable for the tournament. We have prepared well for the games, especially the one against Thailand,” said Lưu Quang Điện Biên, head of Việt Nam’s football delegation.

Coach Nguyễn Mai Lan said the team was doing well and had two practice sessions, ahead of the match against title favourites Thailand.

However, Lan, the former national striker who won Southeast Asian Games crown during her career, was confident that they would overcome the first and big challenge and progress in the tournament. — VNS
