HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thùy Linh became the only Vietnamese player still standing at the Nepal International Series badminton tournament yesterday in Kathmandu.
Linh, who is seeded No 1 in the women’s singles category, overcame Iranian Aghaei Hajiagha Soraya, No 3, 21-17, 21-6 in the semi-final match.
She will face Devi Yunita Indah Sari of Indonesia for the gold medal. Sari yesterday defeated Vietnamese Trần Thị Phương Thúy 21-17, 21-16.
On the men’s side, two Vietnamese players who were both seeded were ousted.
Phạm Cao Cường, No 6, was best 13-21, 21-6, 16-21 by No 2 Abhishek Yelegar of India. No 7 Lê Đức Phát lost 19-21, 18-21 to another Indian Siddharath Thakur, No 5.
All finals will be held on Saturday, with the winners sharing a total prize of US$6,000.
In all 76 players from nine nations are taking part in five different events: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. — VNS
