HÀ NỘI — The growing number of young overseas Vietnamese players returning to compete in the V.League 1 is providing Vietnamese football with an increasingly promising talent pool for both domestic clubs and national teams.

Dutch second-tier club MVV Maastricht recently confirmed that defender Lenn-Minh Trần will leave the club to join a V.League 1 side ahead of the 2026-27 season.

According to an anonymous source, HCM City Police FC have signed the 19-year-old defender. However, the club has yet to officially announce the transfer.

Lenn-Minh has a Vietnamese father and a Belgian mother. Both he and his father hold Belgian citizenship, while his grandfather still retains Vietnamese birth documents. The defender is currently applying for Vietnamese citizenship and is valued at about US$372,000 by Transfermarkt.

According to ASEAN Football, Lenn-Minh is regarded as one of the most promising overseas Vietnamese prospects. He represented Belgium at the U17 and U19 levels and developed through the youth academy of Belgian club Genk. Last season, he made 32 appearances for MVV Maastricht in the Dutch second division, including 27 starts, and registered one assist.

Meanwhile, Nam Định FC have strengthened their squad with the signing of American-born overseas Vietnamese defender Reece Minh-Kai Gaylor. The 22-year-old right-back came through the academy of Germany's Schalke 04 before spending time with Swedish third-tier side AFC Eskilstuna.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the recent wave of overseas Vietnamese recruits is their age profile. Alongside Lenn-Minh, players like 19-year-old Lee Williams, 20-year-old Khoa Ngô and Trần Thành Trung at 21 are all eligible for Việt Nam's U22 team at the SEA Games. Some could also represent the U20 side if their citizenship procedures are completed in time.

After developing their skills in professional football environments across Europe and Australia, these players are expected to strengthen Việt Nam's talent pathway from the youth level to the senior national team. 

Their arrival also provides greater competition for places and expands the country's player pool as it works towards long-term international objectives.

The emerging group also offers balance across the pitch. Defensive options include Kyle Colonna, Lenn-Minh and Reece, while Trung, Damian Vũ Thanh An and Vadim Nguyễn add depth in midfield. In attack, Khoa and Lee provide additional options out wide and up front.

Beyond adding depth, the overseas Vietnamese players are expected to contribute greater physicality, aerial strength and tactical flexibility. 

Their experience in more competitive football environments could also help raise the overall standard of the national teams as Vietnamese football continues its long-term development. — VNS
