HÀ NỘI -- Việt Nam have a team of young table tennis stars off to competing, for the first time, in a prestigious continental junior competition.
The four youngsters will be playing in the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship on June 30-July 7 in China.
The tournament will be hosting around 450 athletes from 30 delegations, taking part in age categories from U15 to U19.
The Vietnamese players, who are training in Chongqing City, which is also the venue of the tournament, will take part in the Boys' U19 category.
Four players Nguyễn Duy Phong, Trần Mạnh Cường, Đinh Quang Minh and Nguyễn Hoàng Lâm have been in training under coach Nguyễn Tiến Dũng.
They will vie for medals in both singles and team events against rivals from Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Hàn Quốc, Trung Quốc, Hong Kong, Qatar, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, India, Chinese Taipei and Iran.
Việt Nam's young players made history with a silver in the Boys' U19 team event at the Southeast Asian Age Group Championship 2024 in Malaysia, in May
The result helped the team to win a place at the Chongqing tournament, making their first time taking part in the continental competition for juniors. — VNS
