HÀ NỘI - Việt Nam’s top badminton player, Nguyễn Thùy Linh, was stopped at the second round of the HSBC World Tour circuit - the Yonex Swiss Open in Basel on Thursday.
Linh, ranked No. 18 in the world, lost to the tournament's second seed, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia, who is currently ranked eighth in the world, 0-2.
Even though Linh beat her opponent at the 2023 China Open, the situation in Basel clearly reflected the true strength of the two female athletes.
Tunjung quickly proved the class of the world No. 8 in the first set. Her unpredictable playing style made it difficult for the Vietnamese player to defend. It also caused Linh to lose a lot of strength.
The first set quickly ended in an overwhelming 21-6 victory for Tunjung.
Entering the second set, Linh had a good start when she led her opponent 4-2. However, she could not maintain that advantage for long. Tunjung overwhelmed her to finish the set with a score of 21-13.
Following this event, Linh will move to Spain to participate in the 2024 badminton open tournament. This is also her last tournament to close her competition journey in Europe and return home. VNS
