HCM CITY After losing to Indonesia in the first round of 32nd SEA Games, a strong comeback by the Vietnamese women's basketball team led to victory over Thailand by a score 75-72 in a tense match.
Thailand was able to shut down key Vietnamese players Thảo My and Thảo Vy, allowing the Thais to lead 26-35 at halftime.
For most of the match, the Vietnamese team was playing from behind as Thailand's Rattiyakon Udomsuk had an excellent day knocking down four three-pointers.
On the opposite side, on a day when Thảo My and Thảo Vy were locked down by the Thai defense, Tiểu Duy and Thúy Hằng became key players as they continuously scored important points for the team.
In the third quarter, the Vietnamese team came back strongly to help the team lead with a score of 52-48 before the last quarter.
Thailand lost the game in the third quarter because they made too many fouls, which helped the Vietnamese team get easy points on the free throw line.
The fourth quarter was tense, but thanks to Thúy Hằng's excellence in the decisive moments when she had three consecutive excellent defensive plays and scored four consecutive points, the Vietnamese team led 73-70 in the last minute.
Thai captain Klanbut Supria narrowed the gap to 73-72 with 26 seconds left.
Thailand had to foul to get the ball back in the final seconds of the match, and Thảo My took advantage to score two points on the free-throw line. The match ended with the score 75-73 in favour of Việt Nam.
Meanwhile, the men's team lost to Thailand 104-63 in their first match.
This loss was predicted loss for the men's team as they do not have the strongest squad in this year's SEA Games.
The lack of players playing power forward and center made the Vietnamese team lose rebounds, leading to the loss of the game to the Thai team. VNS
