HCM CITY — Nguyễn Thùy Linh has made it to the final of the Yonex-Sunrise Việt Nam Open badminton tournament for the first time after beating Vũ Thùy Trang on October 1 in HCM City.
Linh, the tournament No 6 and national No 1, needed 37 minutes to beat Trang 21-15, 21-16 in the women's singles semi-final match at the Nguyễn Du Gymnasium.
The Tokyo Olympian receives 5,000 points and will vie for gold against No 7 seed Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia in the final.
Goh worked hard to beat unseeded Trần Thị Phương Thúy 12-21, 21-17, 21-14 in just under an hour.
It is the first time a Vietnamese athlete will feature in the final of the Super 100 tournament on home soil.
On the men's singles side, all host athletes have been eliminated.
The final will see No 3 seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan facing Sun Fei Xiang of China.
Naraka defeated No 6 Weng Hong Yang of China 21-18, 21-14 in the first semi-final, while Sun won 21-11, 21-17 over Cheam June Wei in the second match.
In the other events, the men's doubles will see an all-Chinese final between No 2 duo He Ji Ting and Zhou Hao Dong and No 4 Ren Xiang Yu and Tan Qiang.
Thai sisters Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard, the top title favourites, will face No 2 duo Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi of Indonesia in the women's doubles final.
Indonesia is guaranteed a mixed doubles title as the No 1 pair Rehan Naufal Kusharjantoand Lisa Ayu Kusumawati will play No 4 Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja. VNS
