TRÀ VINH— Trà Vinh Province has invested VNĐ62 billion (US$2.6 million) in a socio-economic development project for ethnic Khmer, according to the provincial Committee for Ethnic Minorities.
The investment includes VNĐ52.5 billion from the State Government and the rest from the government of Ireland.
The government’s investment has been used to build 105 new transport infrastructure works and 46 production models in communes where ethnic Khmer live.
Apart from these two sources of capital, the Việt Nam Social Policy has allocated credit capital of VNĐ20 billion to help production activities of ethnic Khmer.
About 32 per cent of the population in the province is ethnic Khmer.
Since 2008, the province has used VNĐ2.5 trillion from its support funds to improve the living conditions of the Khmer.
The ratio of poor households in the province has decreased by 4 per cent a year in recent years. Last year, the per capita income was more than VNĐ43.6 million (US$1,880) a year.—VNS
