Whirlwinds and flooding cause losses

More than 120 houses were damaged by whirlwinds and flashfloods before dawn yesterday in the northern mountainous province of Lào Cai.

 

LÀO CAI — More than 120 houses were damaged by whirlwinds and flashfloods before dawn yesterday in the northern mountainous province of Lào Cai.

The provincial Steering Committee for Storm Prevention and Control and Rescue said rainfall totalled between 20mm and 40mm in different districts.

Yesterday morning, local authorities helped move residents in dangerous areas to safer places.

Also yesterday, the central province of Hà Tĩnh helped local residents to deal with the consequences of whirlwinds the previous day. More than 50 households were damaged and dozens of hectares of rice fields were submerged.

The northern mountainous province of Yên Bái was hit by heavy rains on Monday. One house was destroyed and 230 others were damaged. As much as 100ha of rice, 23ha of maize and 21ha of trees were destroyed. A total of 5,000 poultry animals died. — VNS
