NGHỆ AN — Police forces of the central province Nghệ An on April 17 seized nearly a tonne of drugs dumped on the roadside of a salt field, likely left by traffickers attempting to escape police after a bust two days prior.

Residents of Quỳnh Thuận Commune, Quỳnh Lưu District in the central province of Nghệ An discovered a heap of bags containing white power, which they then reported to local authorities.

Police arrived to inspect the powder and secured all the bags, weighing nearly one tonne.

Sources said this large amount of drugs was abandoned by criminals in a drug trafficking ring based in Vinh City of Nghệ An that was busted on April 15.

During the April 15 raid, authorities detained four suspects and seized nearly 700kg of drugs packed into 600 packets and hidden inside 30 loudspeakers.

The police said the drugs were transported from Laos into Việt Nam on a truck.

The find is the latest large drugs bust in Việt Nam, amplfying fears the country is becoming a transit point for drugs from the Golden Triangle of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. — VNS
