HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc has called for more inspections and stricter punishment regarding wrongdoings over the management and use of military land.

The PM made the request at an online meeting held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence in Hà Nội on Thursday to review 24 years of implementing the Ordinance on Protecting National Defence Works and Military Zones.

He stressed the importance of connecting economic development with national defence.

He noted the ministry needed to effectively implement State management tasks on security and order to manage and protect defence works and military zones.

He asked the ministry to actively review and propose recommendations to amend and issue legal regulations to improve State management efficiency towards defence projects and military zones.

The PM instructed armed forces to promote their role as consultants for local authorities in carrying out military and national defence tasks as well as actively co-ordinating with local agencies to implement socio-economic development projects.

Deputy Minister of Defence Phan Văn Giang said the ordinance was issued in 1994, creating an important legal foundation for the Party and authorities at all levels to direct and manage the protection of defence works and military zones, contributing to promoting socio-economic development and national defence and security.

However, it needed updating to meet the needs of today’s climate.

Participants at the meeting also agreed it was time to build the ordinance into a law on managing and protecting defence works and military zones to ensure the unification of the legal system. — VNS
