Three dead in Nghệ An mine collapse

Three people died in the collapse of a closed tin mine on Wednesday afternoon in Châu Hồng Commune, Quỳ Hợp District, the central province of Nghệ An.

NGHỆ AN — Three people died in the collapse of a closed tin mine on Wednesday afternoon in Châu Hồng Commune, Quỳ Hợp District, the central province of Nghệ An.

At 3:30pm, a group of local people in the mine to illegally pick up leftover tin ore was buried and killed when the mine collapsed, Quỳ Hợp Police announced.

The victims were Sầm Thị Hải, 32, Lương Văn Tuấn, 42 and Lương Thị Hảo, 37.

It took the rescue team two hours to reach the scene and extract the victims’ bodies.

Hồ Lê Ngọc, secretary of Quỳ Hợp District’s Party Committee, told Thanh niên (Young people) newspaper the mine used to belong to a local company but it had been returned to local authorities.

Although the mine is closed, people continued to explore it to collect tin ore without licences.

Further investigation is being conducted into the case. — VNS
