HOÀ BÌNH — A roller barrier has been installed as part of a pilot programme on Cun Slope on National Highway No 6 in northern Hoà Bình Province in an attempt to reduce the number of vehicles that overturn in collisions on the notorious stretch of road.

At a length of 150 metres, this is the first such roller barrier in the country.

Lê Minh Tuấn, director of the Lê Minh Construction One Member Co Ltd, said the company got approval from the Việt Nam Directorate of Roads to install the system as a trial.

The roller barrier system costs about VNĐ2 billion (US$86,000) and was manufactured by South Korea-based ETI Co Ltd.

The barrier has a series of rotating mechanisms made from chemical compounds which are designed to minimise the severity of accidents by converting shock energy from vehicle collisions into rotational energy, Tuấn said.

The stretch of National Highway No 6 that passes through Hoà Bình Province is known as an accident hotspot due to its complicated geography and foggy weather. — VNS
