HÀ NỘI – Hà Nội yesterday announced a decision to grant clemency to 34 prisoners who are serving sentences at the city’s detention centres.

The decision was signed by the Hà Nội’s People’s Court following a proposal from the city’s police to release the prisoners ahead of schedule.

Colonel Nguyễn Văn Viện, deputy director of Hà Nội’s Police Department, said the prisoners were being released for good behavior

Their release had been implemented transparently and in accordance with the law.

The amnesty reflected the humanitarian values of the Vietnamese nation, and encouraged offenders to turn a new leaf, he said.

On behalf of the prisoners, Phạm Thị Hoa, a prisoner at Prison No1, thanked the supervisory board and police for their support during her rehabilitation.

Hoa promised to become a useful person to her family and society, and hoped those who received amnesty like her would get jobs and settle down after being reunited with their families.

She also said she hoped other inmates would make greater efforts to rehabilitate and receive amnesty in the future. – VNS
