HÀ NỘI — A tropical low-pressure system near the East Sea has gained strength and become a typhoon – internationally named Bebinca – on Monday morning.

The typhoon is heading towards the East Sea.

Due to the typhoon, torrential rain is forecast for northern and north-central regions from midnight on Wednesday through to Friday. Rainfall is predicted to rise to 350mm, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

At the same time, thunderstorms will hit areas around the Bắc Bộ (Tonkin) Gulf and seas from Bình Thuận Province to Cà Mau Province as well as from Cà Mau Province to Kiên Giang Province.

The centre said seas would be severely rough in the middle and southern part of the East Sea, including Trường Sa (Spratly) Archipelago, because of the influence of the inter-tropical convergence zone combined with the south-west monsoon.

By 10am on Monday, the typhoon was located in waters around China’s Guangdong Province, with wind speed of up to 75km per hour near its eye.

The typhoon was slowly moving east at 5km per hour.

The centre warned that the typhoon would reach the northern part of the Tonkin Gulf, about 100-130km from the coast of Quảng Ninh Province to Nam Định Province, by 10am on Thursday. — VNS
