HCM CITY— The Department of Construction of HCM City has urged several district-level People’s Committee and related units to complete the relocation of households living along canals.

The city has more than 20,000 households living on and along the canals, according to the Department of Construction.

The city must complete compensation, clearance and resettlement for 8,400 households living along canals by 2020, according to a relocation plan issued in May.

The compensation payments for 8,400 households will be taken from the State budget, while others will be from enterprises.

The total compensation for all 13,800 households has reached VNĐ43 trillion (US$1.8 billion).

The city’s Department of Planning and Architecture said that relocating the households living along canals was a difficult task.

The department is working with district authorities to call for investment from enterprises and reduce administrative procedures in order to speed up relocation. — VNS
