BẠC LIÊU — As of Wednesday morning, three people had died and nine others injured in a knife attack that occurred on Tuesday in Hưng Hội Commune in the Mekong Delta province of Bạc Liêu’s Vĩnh Lợi District, an official said.
The dead include Hồ Thi Trâm, 81, Hồ Bích Ngọc, 11, and Dương Tú Quyên, seven months old.
Party Secretary Nguyễn Bình Tân of Vĩnh Lợi District said that some victims with minor injuries have been discharged from various hospitals, while others with serious injuries have been transferred to central hospitals for further treatment.
According to the initial investigation, on Tuesday afternoon, Thạch Sà Khên (also known as Sà Phên), 35, who lives in Hưng Hội Commune, suddenly attacked a number of local people with a knife.
As soon as they were informed of the incident, police from Vĩnh Lợi District coordinated with relevant forces to try to control Khên. All the victims were rushed to the communal health care station and Bạc Liêu General Hospital for emergency treatment.
All of the affected persons did not have any conflict with Khên, according to police. Some people speculated that he had committed the crime under the influence of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”.
Khên, who is being detained for further investigation, has suffered a mental disorder for about 10 years, according to police.
