BÌNH THUẬN — Police in south central Bình Thuận Province on June 18 decided to detain and prosecute eight people for allegedly causing public disorder, damaging property and resisting on-duty officials following disturbances in Phan Rí Cửa Town in Tuy Phong District and Phan Rí Thành Town in Bắc Bình District.

Colonel Nguyễn Văn Nhiều, spokesperson of the provincial police, said the suspects were extremists who were directly involved in the disturbances in the two towns on June 10 and 11.

In response to the incidents, the provincial People’s Committee temporarily banned using recording devices such as cameras, mobile phones and fly cameras in the headquarters of the provincial Party Committee, People’s Council and People’s Committee.

Disrupting security and order, enticing others to cause chaos and brining weapons, explosive or flammable materials into the restricted areas without consent of provincial authorities was also banned.

On June 10, the disturbance began at about 5pm when a group of people gathered and moved to the provincial People’s Committee headquarters to protest the draft law on special administrative-economic zones.

The disorder reached its peak when hundreds of people threw stones at the committee’s headquarters, attacked police with petrol bombs and destroyed property. In Bắc Bình District, 20 automobiles and motorbikes were destroyed or burned during the two days.

As many as 30 police officers were injured and the headquarters of the provincial Fire Police Department in Phan Rí Cửa Town of Tuy Phong District was seriously damaged.

In Phan Thiết City, 23 automobiles and motorbikes were burned and one car was damaged. Nearly 45 police officers were wounded.

HCM City detain fake policemen

On Saturday, HCM City’s Police in District 1 detained two men for allegedly imitating policemen to agitate the masses and slander the police.

Nguyễn Hồng Thái, 33, was caught wearing a police uniform in the centre of the city.

On Sunday, Trần Quốc Tuấn, 23, was also caught wearing a coat printed with the police sign and holding a fake police identity card.

The suspects were allegedly involved in the disturbances in the city, and aimed to slander the city’s police force by behaving violently towards protesters.

Previously, on June 14-15 the city’s police arrested and prosecuted Nguyen Willian Anh, from USA, and Trương Hữu Lộc, in Tân Bình District, for security disruptions. — VNS
