HCM CITY — The HCM City Department of Transport has begun to dismantle the tollbooths in the Thủ Thiêm Tunnel under the Sài Gòn River, which have remained unused for six years, to ease the flow of traffic.

It will finish the work within the first quarter.

Built in 2011 with Japanese official development assistance funding, the tollbooths were meant to collect fees for repairing and maintaining the tunnel. They were only used during a one-month trial, and were abandoned after the Road Maintenance Fund was introduced in 2013, clogging the road leading to Thủ Thiêm tunnel. — VNS
