HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam and China have agreed to boost co-operation in humanitarian activities, especially in international humanitarian aid, co-operation between Mekong basin countries and human resource development.

The outcomes came from a discussion between chairwoman of the Việt Nam Red Cross Nguyễn Thị Xuân Thu and her Chinese counterpart Chen Zhu in Hà Nội on Thursday.

At the event, the two leaders committed to support each other during natural disasters through the release of humanitarian aid between the two countries’ Red Cross societies.

The China Red Cross agreed to promote co-operation with countries in the Mekong basin, including Việt Nam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. A co-operation mechanism will be established to tackle humanitarian challenges in the region, especially improvement of community’s resilience capacity to climate change.

The two sides will also exchange experience and organise training courses and visits in the fields of healthcare, disaster prevention and adaptation, and communications on avian flu prevention at the two countries’ border provinces.

The two societies have achieved remarkable results in implementing many bilateral co-operation activities, such as visit exchanges, release of humanitarian aid during disasters, organisation development, healthcare and communication programmes during the past years. — VNS
