HÀ NỘI — The Investigation Police Agency under the Public Security Ministry announced on Tuesday it has arrested three former bank officials on charges of appropriating property.

The suspects worked at the Hải Phòng branch of Ocean Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Ocean Bank).

On September 16, the police issued an arrest warrant for the three suspects -- Trần Thị Kim Chi, 33, former director of Ocean Bank’s Hải Phòng branch and a resident of Nam Định Province; and two former officers Lê Vương Hoàng, 26; and Nguyễn Thị Minh Huệ, 27 – for alleged involvement in appropriating property worth over VNĐ400 billion (US$17.6 million).

The three suspects were determined to have fled this month after dozens of customers of Ocean Bank’s Hải Phòng branch reported the violations at the branch to relevant authorities. Some 20 customers who have deposit books with money amounting to $17.6 million since 2012 were not included in the bank’s database.

Specifically, information on the deposit cards did not match information of the sender’s name and the amount of savings, recorded in the core banking system.

At a meeting with customers in the middle of this month, the bank’s representative said as soon as the investigation agency made public its investigation results, the bank would address the violations following legal procedures. — VNS
