HCM CITY – Innovative Technology Development Corporation has sent a proposal to the HCM City People’s Committee to install automatic tollbooths to collect tolls from vehicles entering the city centre.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin in 2019 with 36 automatic, multi-lane booths installed around entry points to the downtown area besides an operations centre.

The second phase starting in 2027 will entail setting up 39 more booths when the city would have an extensive public transport system comprising a metro and a bus rapid transit system.

The project is estimated to cost VNĐ1.67 trillion (US$73.04 million).

Three different pricing methods have been proposed.

The first will see small cars and taxis charged VNĐ40,000 ($1.76).

Under the second, it is VNĐ40,000 for cars and taxis and VNĐ50,000 for trucks and coaches with more than nine seats.

The final option is VNĐ30,000 for taxis and VNĐ40,000 for private cars and other vehicles.

ITD is also working on an appropriate pricing method for peak and non-peak hours.

The company will use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPF) to identify vehicles and charge toll from a prepaid account, meaning drivers do not have to slow down and manually pay the toll. – VNS
