HCM CITY — A cosmetic surgery clinic in HCM City was forced to temporarily cease operations after an American man died during a cosmetic surgery.

This was stated by Prof. Nguyễn Tấn Bỉnh, director of HCM City’s Health Department.

According to the department’s initial information, on Wednesday, Edward Hartley, 53, went to the clinic for a surgery to remove the loose skin around his hip, a problem which developed after he lost a lot of weight.

After checking in at 4pm, the patient was made to lie on the operating table for surgery to be conducted by Dr Nguyễn Việt Thành.

However, after receiving anesthesia for 10-15 minutes, through the monitor screen, Thành found that the man showed signs of circuit obstruction.

Dr Thành immediately carried out emergency procedures to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing while calling for assistance from the nearby Trưng Vương Hospital.

Twenty minutes later, doctors of Trưng Vương Hospital arrived at the salon and continued cardiopulmonary resuscitation but failed to revive Hartley.

Following the incident, the Health Department’s inspectors examined the clinic and found that it was not licensed to perform this surgery.

All medical records were transferred to the police in District 10 for investigation.  VNS
