HCM CITY – Five houses fell into the Rạch Giồng-Kinh Lộ River and three houses were damaged after a landslide occurred in Hiệp Phước Commune in HCM City’s Nhà Bè District on Tuesday.

A change of river flow created a whirlpool, causing the landslide, according to the HCM City’s Department of Transport.

The landslide extended along 50m of the riverbank and more than 20m inland.

The city’s Department of Transport is working with Nhà Bè District’s People’s Committee to relocate households to a safe place.

The district’s People’s Committee has asked residents in the river area to move to a safe place while authorities remove eight houses in the area to prevent further landslides.

Damage to residents’ properties amounted to more than VNĐ200 million (US$9,000).

Local authorities will offer affected residents VNĐ1 million ($45) to VNĐ2 million ($90). They will be relocated in resettlement areas.

Forty landslides have occurred in eight city districts, with Nhà Bè District experiencing the highest number of landslides, according to the city’s Department of Transport. – VNS
