AN GIANG — The An Giang People’s Court on Tuesday sentenced a 60-year-old Cambodian woman to two years and three months of imprisonment for illegally transporting money and gold via the border.
On March 11, the Tịnh Biên International Gate Customs stopped Vuoch Hea, a resident of Cambodia’s Kirivong District in Takeo Province, as she drove into the country via the border gate without making any declaration.
Customs officials found that she was carrying 100 million Cambodian Riel (US$24,500) in her bag, and 8kg gold, worth around VNĐ7.4 billion ($328,800), hidden on her body. The objects were seized and put into State custody.
Hea confessed to officials that the money she was carrying was meant to pay off debts incurred on purchasing goods at Nhà Bàng Market in Tịnh Biên District and Châu Đốc Market in Châu Đốc City. She also admitted that she was planning to sell the gold and use the money to buy construction materials to take back to Cambodia. — VNS
