HCM CITY— HCM City’s People’s Committee has set up an interdisciplinary inspection team to check food safety across the city during an action month for food safety that kicked off last Saturday.

The inspection team will check food producing and processing facilities, abattoirs, traditional markets and food eateries as well as liquor producers and traders in the city during the one-month campaign.

The campaign also includes communication activities to raise awareness among producers, traders and consumers about food safety issues, especially fresh foods such as vegetables, meats and seafood.

Abuse of pesticides, antibiotics, food addictives and prohibited substances remained a great challenge for food safety management, said Phạm Khánh Phong Lan, head of the city’s Food Safety Board.

The campaign highlighted the city’s efforts to ensure food safety along the food production chain from manufacturing, processing, distribution and warehousing, Lan said.

"Concerted efforts of local authorities, producers, traders and consumers are needed to prevent unsafe and unhygienic food," she said. —VNS
