HÀ NỘI — Ngô Văn Quý, vice chairman of the Hà Nội People’s Committee, urged the evaluation of trees at schools to avoid repeated tree collapse incidents, posing danger to students.

He called for collaboration between the municipal Department of Education and Training, People’s Committees at district and town levels, the Hà Nội Green Tree Park Company and relevant units to set up plans to trim tree branches and protect trees.

The requirement was made following a serious accident when a tree fell at the Chu Văn An High School.

On March 31, strong winds and heavy rain led to the collapse of 30m xà cừ tree (African mahoganies or Khaya senegalensis) with root diameter of up to 1.5m.

Nguyễn Gia Linh, a grade 10 student, broke her left arm and leg, and is currently being treated at the Việt Nam-Germany Hospital.

Three other students, also from grade 10, received minor injuries. — VNS
