BẠC LIÊU — Search for the last missing victim in the Bạc Liêu boat capsize is continuing on Friday, Bùi Minh Túy, chairman of Đông Hải District People’s Committee, said.

The missing person is Lưu Thị Mỹ Duyên, 19, of Đông Hải District. Her family and friends who survived the incident, which occurred on Thursday evening, confirmed the information.

The boat was carrying 40 attendants of the Nghing Ông Festival and capsized in Bạc Liêu Province on Thursday morning. Two persons died and 12 were hospitalised, while 14 were rescued and did not receive any injury, local media reported.

Initial investigation revealed that the boat belonged to fishermen. The boat, which was overloaded, capsized due to high waves and strong winds, said Ngô Thành Thật, deputy director of the Bạc Liêu police.

The Nghing Ông Festival was held on April 4-6 this year at the Ông Nam Hải Shrine in Bạc Liêu Province’s Đông Hải District. It is a traditional festival of the coastal province’s fishing community to pray for a safe and prosperous fishing season. — VNS
