PHÚ YÊN — Over 300 veterans of the war to protect Việt Nam’s Trường Sa (Spratly) archipelago attended a get-together in Đông Hòa District of the south central coastal province of Phú Yên on Tuesday.

The function, the 10th of its kind in Phú Yên, aimed to commemorate the Gạc Ma naval battle on the Trường Sa island on March 14, 1988.

The ex-servicemen exchanged stories about the fight to safeguard national sea and island sovereignty.

The Trường Sa Soldiers Liaison Committee, which organised the event, presented gifts to veterans and the family of a fallen soldier.

A memorial site dedicated to fallen Gạc Ma soldiers has been under construction in the south central coastal province of Khánh Hòa since March 2015. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed this month.

The building funds were sourced from donations by trade unions and employees nationwide to the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour’s “Love for Hoàng Sa-Trường Sa” programme. — VNS
