HÀ NỘI — Fines of some VNĐ1 billion (US$44,200) will be imposed on five production units that polluted a river branch in the capital city’s Hà Đông District, the city’s People’s Committee said.

Fabric manufacturer Nguyễn Trung Cường will have to pay a fine of some VNĐ230 million ($10,200) and its operations will be suspended for six months.

The production units of Nguyễn Bá Khoa and Nguyễn Bá Chính will be fined VNĐ266 million ($11,800) and VNĐ220 million ($9,700) respectively.

Fines of VNĐ158 million ($7,000) and VNĐ151 million ($6,700) will also be imposed on the Huy Phát Joint Stock Company and the Nguyễn Trung Tuất production unit, respectively.

The committee also requested the production units to take responsibility and apply measures to clean the polluted river.

According to the investigation undertaken by the Natural Resources and Environment Division of Hà Đông District, the indicators of wastewater at the five production units all exceeded the threshold and none of the units had wastewater treatment systems, deputy chief of the district secretariat Vũ Hoàng Tâm told vietnamnet.vn.

The condition of the river was reported to the district at the end of last year. The river’s water had turned red and had a foul-smelling odour due to the untreated wastewater from the production units, according to the report. — VNS
