THỪA THIÊN – HUẾ — A freight train transporting stones derailed last night in central Thừa Thiên-Huế Province, resulting in a halt in operations for several hours on the North-South railway service.
The accident occurred at around 8.30pm in the area of Lộc Thủy Commune, Phú Lộc District, after the train, travelling from north to south, had just passed through the Phước Tượng Tunnel.
Four out of five carriages turned over and the stones being transported were thrown on the road.
Nguyễn Thanh Sơn, director of Việt Nam Railway’s Thừa Thiên-Huế branch, said no one was injured in the accident. However, the rescue operation was proving difficult because the area was inaccessible by normal crane-trucks. Specialised vehicles from Đà Nẵng City has been called to assist in rescue work.
The operation of the North-South railway service was stopped for several hours due to the accident. SE7 train travelling from Hà Nội to HCM City was forced to stop at Huế station until repair work was completed.
According to the initial investigation, the high speed and the heavy freight were responsible for the accident. — VNS
