THỪA THIÊN - HUẾ — One person is reported to have died and eight others were injured in the central provinces of Thừa Thiên-Huế, Quảng Trị and Quảng Bình due to Typhoon Rai.

The typhoon also blew away the roofs of 222 buildings in the localities as it passed through these central provinces on Monday evening.

Thừa Thiên-Huế Province’s centre for flood, storm prevention and rescue yesterday reported that a man in Phú Lộc District died after strong winds swept him into the local river, while another in Quảng Điền was seriously injured when a tree fell on him.

In Quảng Trị, seven people were injured when their houses collapsed.

A total of 222 buildings in the provinces have collapsed or have had their roofs blown away --41 in Thừa Thiên-Huế, 151 in Quảng Trị and 30 in Quảng Bình. All schools in Thừa Thiên-Huế were shut down yesterday. Power has been cut in almost the entire locality.

Some 93ha of rice, rubber, cassava and vegetables in the locality were destroyed because of strong winds and heavy rains.

Rai, this year’s category 5 storm, emerged from the East Sea and moved directly to the central of Việt Nam before it weakened into a tropical low pressure system after arriving at the regional coast with wind speeds of 62-74kmph. — VNS
