One fatality and many students of Thái Nguyên Industrial College hospitalised

THÁI NGUYÊN — One student has died after fourteen students of the Thái Nguyên Industrial College living in the same dormitory were hospitalised with an unidentified fever.

The Thái Nguyên Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said that during the four-day National Day holiday, from last Saturday to Tuesday, three students from the college were sick and had to be transferred to the Thái Nguyên Central Hospital for treatment.

The CDC worked with the Thái Nguyên City Medical Centre to investigate.

Initial reports show that the most serious case was V.M.C., 16, from Sủng Trà Commune, Mèo Vạc District, the northern mountainous province of Hà Giang.

C. is a student of Intermediate Electricity class K57, living in room 209 K2 of the college’s dormitory.

Last Thursday evening, C. had abdominal pain and vomited.

C. was transferred to Thái Nguyên Central Hospital for examination and treatment.

One day later, C. was in a coma and was diagnosed with meningitis, cholecystitis and gallbladder polyps.

On the same day, in the afternoon, the patient's condition worsened, showing signs of acute myocarditis.

The patient was prescribed endotracheal intubation, blood filtration, endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation and was diagnosed with multiple organ failure, acute heart failure and hepatitis B and had a very poor prognosis.

On Saturday, C.'s family asked the hospital to let the student go home, where C. later died.

The second patient is H.M.N., 15, also from Mèo Vạc District.

N. is studying at the Intermediate Electricity B class K58, living in room 206 K3 of the dormitory.

On Sunday evening, N. had headache, stomach ache, a fever of 40 degrees Celsius and fatigue.

The college medical staff examined and transferred N. to the Thái Nguyên Central Hospital for health monitoring with symptoms of high fever, headache, chest pain and stomachache of unidentified cause.

N. then was transferred to the National Children's Hospital for treatment.

The third patient is T.M.M, 15, also from Mèo Vạc District, a student of Intermediate Electricity B K58 who lives in room 203 K3.

On Monday, M. had convulsions and was taken to the Thái Nguyên Central Hospital. The patient is being treated at the emergency ward and is in a coma, on a ventilator.

In addition to these cases, the Thái Nguyên Central Hospital also recorded 11 other patients with fevers who are college students living in the same dormitory. They are all under special supervision.

After many students were hospitalised during the holiday, the Thái Nguyên City Medical Centre and the college disinfected the entire K1, K2, K3 dormitories and the school's cafeteria.

All students in three dormitory rooms with the ill youngsters were quarantined and asked to self monitor their health and notify the college if they have any unusual symptoms. — VNS
