BÀ RỊA-VŨNG TÀU — Two foreign seamen who experienced a labour accident while working at sea were rescued and safely brought ashore, announced the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre Zone 3 on Friday.

The two crew members work for the ship "Bfat Southern," registered under the Marshall Islands nationality.

Previously, at approximately 6 pm on Wednesday, the centre, managed by the Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine) under the Ministry of Transport (MoT), received a distress signal from the "Bfat Southern" ship.

The ship, bearing registration number V7A4551, was en route from Singapore to China.

When it was approximately 175 nautical miles southeast of Vũng Tàu, Tribhuwan, a machine officer of Indian nationality, and Gunagi Pratap Prakash, a mechanic also of Indian nationality, suffered a workplace accident resulting in severe burns.

The ship's captain contacted the centre to request the urgent evacuation of the two crew members for medical treatment.

Upon receiving this information, the centre instructed the HCM City Coastal Information Station to establish direct communication with the ship and offer initial medical advice to the distressed crew members.

The centre suggested that the ship redirect its course towards Vũng Tàu City for further assistance.

Faced with a life-threatening emergency situation requiring prompt treatment, and under the guidance of the National Committee for Disaster Incident Response and Search and Rescue, the MoT, and Vinamarine, the centre dispatched the specialised search and rescue vessel SAR 272 for the rescue operation.

The centre collaborated with the Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province Command of Disaster Prevention, Control, and Search and Rescue to assign doctors and nurses to accompany the SAR 272 vessel to the scene and provide medical treatment to the two crew members.

SAR 272 approached the "Bfat Southern" ship at around 7 am the following day.

Medical personnel provided initial aid to the injured seamen before transporting them to Vũng Tàu City.

Doctors reported that the two crew members sustained serious burns. Thanks to the emergency treatment, they are now out of danger and are receiving further medical care at the Vietnam-France Hospital in Hồ Chí Minh City. — VNS
