HÀ NỘI — Young Vietnamese and Chinese coast guard officers shared their working experiences to enhance mutual understanding and jointly respond to challenges at sea.

They were speaking during a workshop in Hà Nội on Thursday, held within the framework of the third exchange programme of Vietnamese and Chinese young coast guard officers.

The officers exchanged and shared experiences on law enforcement at sea and marine environment protection in the form of questions and answers.

Political and ideological viewpoints in law enforcement at sea stated by the Vietnamese officers have received the attention of fellow Chinese officers. Chinese Coast Guard officers learned about political and ideological education for officers and soldiers on ships and in the process of law enforcement.

The Vietnamese officers said preventing and combating marine environmental pollution, organising response to environmental incidents and overcoming environmental pollution are some of the important tasks of the Vietnam Coast Guard.

They shared remarkable working experiences such as applying the model of managing marine resources, protecting biodiversity on a community basis; giving specific rights to local coastal communities to share responsibilities with the State in the effective management and conservation of marine resources.

The officers also introduced guidelines, policies and orientations of the Party and the State on marine environmental protection.

Officers from the China Coast Guard shared their experiences in coordinating with authorities such as customs and defence departments in combating smuggling crimes at sea.

They said they have established cooperation agreements with local agencies, conducted joint inspections with agencies in handling violation cases and strengthened communication.

Regarding measures to prevent and combat administrative violations and smuggled goods at sea, the Chinese side said they apply deterrence warnings and strengthen communication on non-dangerous acts and impose strict sanctions on acts causing serious consequences. At the same time, the coast guard also raise public legal knowledge and awareness of law observance.

After learning the functions, tasks and activities of each country's Coast Guard, the officers from Việt Nam and China agreed that the two forces share similarities and face the same challenges during law enforcement at sea.
