Central provinces urged to respond to floods and protect dykes

HÀ NỘI — The General Department for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has issued an official document to the People's Committees of Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces on measures to ensure the safety of the dyke system.

The agency asked the provinces to closely monitor water levels in rivers, mobilise forces and strictly patrol, guard and protect dykes.

The provinces are also requested to inspect and review dykes that are under construction and immediately implement measures to ensure the safety of the systems.

Local authorities need to quickly report incidents to the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

On Thursday, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control sent an official dispatch, asking Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces to actively take measures to respond to floods, flash floods and landslides.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Thanh Hóa to Hà Tĩnh provinces experienced heavy rain of 150-300mm, causing large scale floods. 

In Nghệ An Province, three people died and three others missing while fishing in the heavily flooded area. 

The heavy rains and floods also destroyed nine houses and flooded another 8,139 homes. 

About 88 households have to move to another place due to floods.

Thousands of hectares of paddy fields, crops, industrial crops, aquatic products and planted forests have been submerged in water.

Thousands of livestock and poultry were killed and washed away.

A dyke section in Hưng Đạo Commune, Hưng Nguyên District broke on Thursday night.

Hundreds of residents and military officers were deployed to protect the dyke in heavy rain.

After nearly 12 hours, the broken dyke section was fixed, ensuring the safety of nearly 1,700 local households.

Water levels on the Cả River in Nam Đàn District was 6.01m on Thursday afternoon and 4.1m on La River, and expected to continue to rise.

To proactively respond to floods, flash floods and landslides, localities are required to closely monitor the development of rain, inform authorities and people to evacuate those living in high-risk areas.

Localities are asked to mobilise forces to control traffic; inspect to ensure the safety of mining tunnels, reservoirs, downstream, irrigation system and dykes.

Media agencies, especially the grassroots information system, are told to strengthen propaganda activities, issue information to cope with the heavy rain, floods, flash floods and landslides. 

Localities and agencies are tasked to send reports regularly to the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and National Committee for Natural Disaster Response and Search and Rescue. — VNS
