HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc has said hosting of the DPRK-USA Hà Nội Summit demonstrates the essence of Việt Nam.
Speaking to the Việt Nam News Agency, the PM explained that being a responsible member of the global community means helping solve regional and global issues.
He feels organising such an important event will help bring peace, stability and development opportunities, echoing comments made by General Secretary of the Communist Party and President Nguyễn Phú Trọng at the Diplomatic Conference in August 2018.
"That Hà Nội was chosen as the venue for the second summit is clear evidence of Việt Nam’s improving role and position in both the region and the world," he said.
After joining the United Nations (UN) in 1977, Việt Nam served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 tenure and is now the only candidate of the Asia-Pacific group for a non-permanent seat on the council for the 2020-21 tenure.
In the region, Việt Nam is an important member of ASEAN and a significant diplomatic partner to countries across the world, according to the Prime Minister.
"With experience in holding large-scale summits like the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017 and the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2018, Việt Nam will do its best to make this summit a success," he said.
He expressed hope that Việt Nam would help settle the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula and play a role to build peace in the region.
"As ASEAN Chair in 2020 and a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2020-21 tenure, Việt Nam believes it can make active contributions to the peace process, as well as towards global sustainable development," the leader stated.
He expressed his belief that as a responsible and dedicated member of the international community, Việt Nam would become a trustworthy destination for major international conferences of the region and the world in the future. — VNS
