HÀ NỘI — Host U21 Việt Nam and U21 Yokohama of Japan played out a 2-2 draw in yesterday’s match as part of the Thanh Niên Newspaper International U21 Football Tournament.

Earlier, U19 Việt Nam also missed out on a win in the last 20 seconds of their match against U21 Thailand. The 3-3 draw between U19 Việt Nam and U21 Thailand ensured that U21 Việt Nam would certainly enter the final before the match against the Japanese team.

U21 Việt Nam created more scoring opportunities, but it was the Japanese team who scored the first goal in the 24th minute. However, the host country immediately equalised just a minute after, with a strike by midfielder Trần Ngọc Sơn. The first half ended with the scores level.

Minutes after the break, U21 Việt Nam were awarded a penalty after the opposition defender handled the ball in the penalty area. Defender Lê Văn Sơn succeeded in scoring the penalty, giving Việt Nam an advantage.

However, U21 Việt Nam fell into difficulty when Ngọc Sơn was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. The score was maintained at 2-1 by the host until the 90th minute, but they lost out on victory when U21 Yokohama scored a last gasp equaliser in extra time.
