HÀ NỘI — A programme to make bánh chưng (square, glutinous rice cakes) for disadvantaged people will take place at the Việt Nam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism on February 8 on the outskirts of Hà Nội, ahead of Tết (Lunar New Year) festival, the Department of Ethnic Culture under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced.

Key highlights of the programme include the traditional New Year cây nêu (bamboo pole) erection ceremony and a collective chưng cake making activity dedicated to supporting disadvantaged people.

The organiser plans to prepare around 610 gift packages, each worth VNĐ$2 million (US$76). These gifts will be presented to policy beneficiaries and disadvantaged households in various localities, including Quang Tri and Cao Bang provinces, several communes in Hanoi, centres caring for Agent Orange/dioxin victims, and ethnic communities living and working at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism.

Beyond its charitable significance, the programme also aims to introduce domestic and international visitors to the unique cultural values of Vietnam’s traditional Tet, while raising public awareness, particularly among younger generations, of the responsibility to preserve and promote the cultural identities of Vietnam’s ethnic groups. — VNA/VNS
