BÌNH THUẬN — Slag dumps of Vĩnh Tân 2 thermoelectric plant pose a high risk of causing environmental damage, local authorities said.
Phạm Văn Nam, deputy head of Bình Thuận Province People’s Commitee, on Tuesday, had a meeting with contractors and relevant agencies at the Vĩnh Tân Thermal Power Centre on environment protection.
Speaking at the event, Đỗ Văn Thái, deputy director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said that Vĩnh Tân 2 thermoelectric plant’s slag dumps were their most serious concern.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Lê Việt Thắng, deputy director of the provincial police, said that upon investigation, the pollution at Vĩnh Tân Thermal Power Centre was found to be severe.
“Without an examination we can still tell how the surroundings are visibly contaminated,” he said.
On the construction of the Vĩnh Tân 4 thermoelectric plant, Thái asked investors to operate environmental surveillance cameras, separate treated wastewater discharge and not to discharge it into the same pipelines as the plant’s cooling water.
At Vĩnh Tân 1 thermoelectric plant, according to Thanh Niên (Young People) newspaper, instead of dumping waste mud into the sea, workers dredged more than 400,000cu.m of waste mud into the plant’s wharf for coal vessels.
However, Lê Trung Trực, deputy head of Tuy Phong District People’s Committee, stressed on the terrible dust clouds emanating from Mãi Xanh Brick Factory project and slag dumps of Vĩnh Tân 1 and Vĩnh Tân 4 thermoelectric plants. He urged investors to come up with solutions to resolve these dust clouds, especially before the Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday.
Nam asked the project’s investors, constructors and relevant agencies to tighten management on pollution and prevent environment incidents during the holiday. — VNS
