NGHỆ AN — A dead wild elephant was discovered on Thursday afternoon in Châu Phong Commune, Quỳ Châu District in the central province of Nghệ An.
Lê Xuân Đình, head of the district’s Forest Ranger Division said the elephant's carcass was found in the deep forest by villagers.
Currently, the cause of the elephant's death remained unknown, he said.
According to local residents, the dead elephant is one of the last two remaining elephants in the district. Previously, the elephant herd was quite crowded, but gradually died, so there were only the two elephants left in the district.
The dead elephant was old and had one eye.
Statistics of Pù Mát National Park in the province show that the province has about 16 wild elephants, including 13 individuals living in the park.— VNS
