ĐỒNG THÁP — Đồng Tháp Province’s agriculture, forestry and fishery sector has grown at an estimated 3.9 per cent this year, a conference heard on Monday.
The conference sought to review the province's agricultural restructuring plan in the 2021–25 period and identify new approaches to agricultural restructuring and addresse policy and operational bottlenecks.
Đồng Tháp launched the plan in 2014, with the goal of achieving its objectives by 2020 and has achieved some successful outcomes.
Phase II will continue until 2030.
The plan seeks to restructure agriculture by enhancing key value chains, adopting circular and green economies and promoting digital transformation.
It also seeks to build a sustainable, transparent and climate-resilient agricultural sector that supports modern rural development and farmers.
The period from 2021 to 2024 has shown significant improvement compared to 2020.
Rice production in 2024 is worth over VNĐ16 trillion, up 3.6 per cent from 2020 and accounting for 32.15 per cent of agricultural production.
Mango, ornamental flowers and catfish are also major products.
Experts at the conference suggested ways to improve the value of various supply chains under the restructuring plan.
Trần Minh Hải, deputy principal of the School of Public Policy and Rural Development, recommended creating a soil fertility map and linking cooperatives with large raw material growing regions to foster supply chains.
He also called for prioritising supporting cooperatives participating in in the one- million-hectare high-quality rice programme to reduce emissions.
Ong Hàng Văn, deputy general director of Trường Giang Fisheries JSC, said the province should create catfish farming zones along the Tiền and Hậu rivers to ensure balanced distribution among its various districts.
The province has 333 agricultural processing enterprises, including 49 exporters, with estimated exports of US$4.93 billion since 2021. — VNS
