British International School Hanoi is celebrating the remarkable achievements of two Year 11 students, Dakyung and Ayoung, who have been awarded Top in the World for IGCSE Mathematics by the Cambridge Learner Awards.

This significant accomplishment places both students among the highest-performing Cambridge learners globally and reflects their dedication, as well as the strong academic support provided by BIS Hanoi.

Recognising excellence in the Cambridge Learner Awards

Presented by Cambridge International Education, the Cambridge Learner Awards recognise exceptional student performance in IGCSE examinations worldwide. Achieving the highest score in the world is a rare distinction, highlighting remarkable consistency, determination, and academic strength.

Speaking about her award, Ayoung expressed her surprise and pride: "I was greatly surprised and honoured to receive the Top in the World Award for IGCSE Mathematics. This achievement made all the effort feel truly meaningful. The award has motivated me to continue pushing myself and to enjoy learning even more."

Reflecting on her preparation, Dakyung described her study strategy for exam preparation:

"Right before the exam, I completed one last past paper and scored 100 per cent for the first time. It made me realise that all the preparation could pay off."

She added: "When I saw my grade, I remembered the stack of past papers I had completed. It showed me how powerful practice and persistence can be."

IGCSE at BIS Hanoi: Building strong academic foundations

IGCSE reinforces BIS Hanoi’s commitment to helping students develop confidence, independence, and academic excellence as they progress to the IBDP

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally respected qualification for students aged 14 to 16. At BIS Hanoi, the programme is delivered through an inquiry-based, academically rigorous curriculum designed to foster independence, resilience, and conceptual understanding.

Students at the school consistently perform above UK averages across subjects. In the 2025 IGCSE examinations, 46 per cent of grades awarded were A* or A, compared to 23 per cent in England. Additionally, 85 per cent of grades awarded were A–C, compared to 55 per cent in England. Notably, 6 students achieved a perfect set of A* and A grades.

IGCSE provides students with a strong academic foundation while also nurturing vital skills such as independence, critical thinking, and resilience. These qualities will serve students well as they take the next step into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or beyond, at university level.

Year 12 student Tuong Anh, one of the school’s top IGCSE performers, reflected on the impact of the programme: "The IGCSE helped me become a critical thinker and adapt to challenges. It taught me how to analyse and evaluate information. Independence and organisation were two skills I practised most, and they continue to support me in IB and beyond."
