HÀ NỘI — Đoàn Văn Hậu has become the first Vietnamese football player to compete in Holland.
The defender of Heerenveen SC early Wednesday Hà Nội time made his featured in a match against Roda JC Kerkrade in the Dutch Cup at their home stadium of Abe Lenstra.
Hậu was introduced as a second half substitute in the final minutes of Heerenveen’s 2-0 win.
It was the first time Hậu has featured in the team three months after moving from Việt Nam champions Hà Nội FC to Heerenveen .
Hậu, 20, had nearly five minutes on the field and received a yellow card for his tackle in the additional time.
"I am really happy having this chance playing for Heerenveen officially," said Hậu after the game.
"I heard supporters called my name when I was still on the bench. It made me excited. And when I was on the field it was great.
“Even though I was only on for a short time, it was still strong encouragement to push me to work harder and earn more opportunities," he said.
Coach Johnny Jansen was pleased with Hậu and said the club waited for long time to play him and believed the supporters also wanted to see him on the field.
Jansen said Hậu was a good player and Heerenveen would need him in the near future.
This weekend, Heerenveen will host Heracles in the Eredivisie, the national premier league.
Hậu was one of Việt Nam's best players during the Southeast Asian Games which ended last week. Việt Nam won the gold medal after 60 years of wait. — VNS
