Minh enters quarter-finals of Badminton Asia Champs

HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyễn Tiến Minh has made it into the quarter-final of the ongoing 2019 Badminton Asia Championships, held yesterday at Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium in China.

This is the first time Minh has qualified for the quarter-final of the event. He beat defending champion of the 2018 Việt Nam Open Shesar Rhustavito from Indonesia 2-1 (21-15, 13-21, 21-13).

Minh took a quick lead in the first set and held on to win 21-15, but Rhustavito recovered to win the second set 21-13.

Minh was able to create a big gap in the early minutes of the third set, helping him seal the victory.

He defeated Pui Pang Pong from Macau in the qualifying round.

His next rival is fourth seed Chinese player Chen Long, champion of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Chen beat Chong Wei Feng from Malaysia 21-16, 21-7 in the second round.

Another Vietnamese player, Nguyễn Thùy Linh, was beaten in two sets by fifth seed player He Bingjiao from the host nation 16-21, 13-21. — VNS
