Nam wins first round of Madrid tennis event

Top Vietnamese tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam won the first round of the Open International Villa de Madrid in Spain on Tuesday.

HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam won the first round of the Open International Villa de Madrid in Spain on Tuesday.

The southern province of Tây Ninh–born player beat Ryan James Storrie of England 7-5, 7-5.

Nam is ranked number 414 in the world, while Storrie is world No 655.

Nam, the tournament’s number two seed, will next take on Jeroen Vanneste of Belgium, also world No 655.

The event has a total prize purse of US$15,000.

Nam is training in Spain to improve his world rankings. He will compete in several tournaments to hone his skills and gain points.

The cost for his training is about US$250,000, which is being paid by his club, Becamex Bình Dương. — VNS
