HÀ NỘI — Midfielder Trần Đình Trọng will miss the Asian Cup 2019, which will be held from January 5-February 1 in the United Arab Emirates.
Trọng suffered a foot injury in the first leg of Viet Nam’s 3-2 aggregate win over Malaysia in the ASEAN Football Federation Cup and played through the pain in the second game.
Doctors said his injury was not complicated but needed surgery which would take him several months to recover from.
Trọng was one of few Vietnamese players who played the full 90 minutes in all eight of Việt Nam’s games at the tournament.
Players will have several days rest before returning for training in Hà Nội on Thursday.
They will have a friendly match against North Korea on December 25 in Ha Noi, then leave for the UAE three days later.
Việt Nam are in group D. They will first play Iraq on January 8, Iran on January 12 and Yemen on January 16. — VNS
